James Watkins, DDS, of Hampton, VA,
has joined DANB’s Board of Directors after nomination by the American Association of Dental Examiners (AADE).
He previously served on DANB’s Board of Directors from 1998-2004. Dr. Watkins is a general dentist and a retired
captain in the U.S. Navy Reserve Dental Corps. He has held numerous offices with the Virginia State Board of
Dentistry (VSBD), including two terms as President, and is the first African American dentist to be president of
the VSBD as well as the first Virginia dentist to be appointed to three full terms on the VSBD. He has also served
as President of the Peninsula Dental Society. Honors he has received include being named Fellow of the International
College of Dentists and the American College of Dentists, and thrice receiving the “Dentist of the Year” award from
the Old Dominion Dental Society. Dr. Watkins was recently named the "Star Alumnus of the Year" by the Dental School of the Virginia
Commonwealth University/Medical College of Virginia.
